A visit to Thailand from the Chair of Trustees
Merry has recently returned from a jam-packed and very insightful trip to Thailand, which centred on helping deliver an educational day focused on recognising early symptoms of EEHV, a deadly virus affecting young elephants. She worked alongside leading Thai and international specialists, whose expertise provided invaluable training to the attendees, which comprised of local and international vets, students, mahouts and elephant owners. The day provided insightful discussions to strengthen local knowledge and improve early detection of EEHV.
A visit to the hospital allowed delegates to see the centre’s work firsthand, including the care of a 25‑year‑old elephant recovering from pesticide-related nerve paralysis. Thanks to the specialist hoists we installed in December – funded by our generous supporters, the team has been able to provide the intensive support she needs while she regains strength.
Merry returned to the UK energised by the progress made, the collaborations strengthened, and the enthusiasm shown by everyone who attended the course. She is already looking forward to future visits and tocontinuing her work developing the charity and supporting STEF’s mission to protect Thailand’s domestic elephants.
