Nam Neung is diagnosed with EEHV.

We were sorry to hear that an 8 year old female elephant, Nam Neung was admitted to the STEF Veterinary Centre on 23rd September and later diagnosed with the EEHV virus. The virus affects young elephants up to the age of 10 years and unfortunately recovery is rare, unless intensive and rapid care is provided. Many young elephants often die within 24 hours of showing symptoms. The first mobile qPCR machine was established by STEF, and this allows for a swift diagnosis, to show whether EEHV is present in young elephants with symptoms. We also provide Vitamin C tablets to young elephants on annual health checks, which helps to boost their immune systems to prevent them from catching the virus. Unfortunately, for Nam Neung (and other elephants who contract EEHV), this is not a guaranteed measure to prevent the virus.

When Nam Neung arrived at our elephant hospital in Thailand she had swelling around the temple and cheek area and was showing signs of lethargy. The STEF vet team took blood samples which revealed a drop in her platelet and red blood cell count. The PCR test confirmed the presence of EEHV virus.  Treatment began immediately, and included IV fluid, a blood transfusion (from Thong-Tae, a 16 year old male elephant who is undergoing treatment at the STEF Veterinary Centre for a superficial corneal ulcer), and ARV drugs (Acyclovir). Our vets worked into the night to ensure Nam Neung was given the best chance.

Our head Vet, Dr Aon continues to monitor Nam Neung closely and provides any supportive treatment needed. We will of course update this article with any new information. We are all praying for Nam Neung.

Nam Neung, EEHV treatment

UPDATE

We are delighted to inform you that Nam Nueng has made a full recovery. Her PCR tests returned a negative result and she was able to return home on the 18th October. This was a very quick turnaround and our Vets should be praised for their skill and the level of care they gave Nam Nueng. We must also thank all of our wonderful donors, who provide us with the means to treat elephants like Nam Nueng through paying our Vets salaries, purchasing up to date equipment and building the facilities required for safe and effective treatment. What a fantastic result and we wish Nam Nueng all the best for her future.
