Sponsor Nam Tarn
Calling all dog lovers! Can you help us care for our four-legged friend, Nam Tarn?
Meet our newest team member!
Recently, staff at our Thailand elephant hospital have found a new favourite topic of conversation – a kind, gentle dog called Nam Tarn.
Nam Tarn – which translates to “brown sugar” – was originally a stray living around the rubber plantation next to the STEF hospital in Khok Kloi, Phang Nga Province. She started regularly visiting the hospital, and wasn’t at all fazed by the visiting elephants!
Nam Tarn soon became a hit with hospital staff, and is now a permanent member of the team. She’s playful, energetic and has a really kind temperament. She seems to watch the treatments being administered as if she’s thinking “you’re in safe hands and you’ll be better soon!”.
Nam Tarn isn’t just loved by our volunteers, but she’s also the front-line greeter when visitors – and elephants – come to the hospital.
“I’ve witnessed that many people, in addition to being happy to see the elephants and the work of our hospital, take much pleasure from meeting and stroking Nam Tarn, who, with her resident antics, also brings laughter to them too!”

Get to know Nam Tarn
Breed: mixed
Weight: ~14.5 kg
Age: ~2.5 years
History: It’s not clear how or why Nam Tarn came to the hospital, but she’s an intelligent dog and had obviously been treated well. Perhaps she just saw the fence was greener on the other side, or maybe she’d heard about all the great work we’re doing at our hospital!
Health: She’s been spayed and is fully vaccinated. Our specialist vets regularly give her parasite prevention and deworming treatments (Bravecto).
Favourite food: She isn’t a big fan of dog food, possibly because she grew up eating human food. We’re trying to gradually improve her diet.
Likes: She loves digging holes all over the hospital grounds – you’ll notice plenty of them if you visit! She’s a real people dog, loving cuddles and belly rubs and meeting the volunteers.
Dislikes: Rain and thunder! Whenever it rains, she trembles and whines, and the hospital staff often have to bring her inside the office to help her feel safe.
Aspiration: Nam Tarn hopes to prove herself as our receptionist. She’s already often the first to greet our visitors!
Join us in safeguarding Nam Tarn’s future, and the future of Thailand’s elephants. Every click and every share helps bring her – and others like her – closer to a healthier, happier life.
