Home of Rest for Elephants

A development project supported by STEF

Our first project is to provide financial support and technical advice to our sister charity, Southern Thailand Elephant Foundation (Thailand) in the construction of a Home of Rest for Elephants.

The development will provide retired, abused, neglected and sick elephants with a tranquil refuge. The Home of Rest for Elephants is being constructed on a 16 rai (6.5 acre) plot of land located in the jungle close to Ban Ton Sae, near Phuket in Southern Thailand.

The acquired land will provide the perfect environment for elephants, with large grounds where they can socialise, graze and enjoy other enriched activities.

Education of both Thai people and international visitors on the welfare needs and cultural significance of the Asian elephant will be an extremely important aspect of the programme of work at the Home of Rest for Elephants. Once the land has been developed for elephants, construction will begin on an education centre. Here, students and visitors will be able to learn about the Asian elephant and how preserving its role in Thai culture will be key to future conservation efforts for the species.

We also want to fund the construction and operation of an Elephant Healthcare Centre. We want to provide elephants, both within the Home of Rest and across Phang Nga Province, with access to veterinary care they may require and provide them with facilities for their recovery, recuperation and rehabilitation from illness or injury.

You can keep up to date with the development of the Home of Rest on our News page.
