Lorraine Miller

Elephant welfare

Lorraine, known as Lainy, is currently based in Australia but is working with zoos and sanctuaries all over the world as a zoological consultant on the management of great apes.  Luckily, she also likes elephants, and has spent time in Thailand volunteering and working at elephant parks, so we are delighted that she has offered to help STEF by becoming a Trustee, and contributing to our journal section (see Lainy’s post on training elephants).

Lainy has degrees in zoology and wildlife conservation, and she has over 16 years of zookeeping experience, working with a range of species in facilities in the UK, Asian and Australasia.  She consulted on a project to bring the first gorillas to New Zealand, and has worked with sanctuaries in Africa and Central America focusing on improving animal welfare.  As well as her current role as a consultant on great apes, Lainy also advices several animal welfare and conservation charities and European endangered species breeding programs.  She has also authored a series of conservation themed children’s books called “The Zookeepers’ Quest”, one of which highlights human-elephant conflict in Uganda.
