Our main project for the last three years has been to fund the construction and all the equipment needed at the STEF Veterinary Centre at Khok Kloi, north of Phuket. Up to now, the nearest elephant hospital in this area was a four-hour journey by truck – not good for a sick elephant. We aim to provide the services of the STEF Veterinary Centre free of charge to elephant owners in Phang Nga and neighbouring provinces, and to continue attending elephants in remoter areas with our mobile veterinary clinic.
Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, including a number of major grant-making trusts and foundations (see here), we have now completed the veterinary centre and it is already receiving patients. Our vet, Dr Aon, also continues to deliver treatment to elephants via the mobile clinic, which has been operating since November 2020, and has been much welcomed by elephant owners in the region.
We need to ensure we have the funds to continue supporting the running costs of the mobile clinic and the hospital. In terms of capital expenditure, our two main priorities for 2022 are:
£2,200 for an additional water tank
£36,250 for a Portable X-ray machine
Please make a gift of whatever size you can and help us continue to provide our Veterinary Centre with the vital equipment it needs. Every penny will make a difference to the welfare of elephants in Southern Thailand. If you wish to support the purchase of medications so that we can continue to supply our veterinary services free of charge, you may like to consider becoming one of our Medicine Angels.
